So I don't talk about fashion much on this blog and I've decided that's a shame. Because I've always loved fashion. It's a fun little part of me that I decided I should talk a little more about from now on. Mmkay?
I've been seeing a lot of fun posts lately on designing a Capsule Wardrobe. And I gotta tell you, it really appeals to me. A Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of only the basics that you LOVE to wear and can be mixed-and-matched very easily. The idea is to keep the number of pieces minimal. Caroline is my favorite expert on the subject and you can find her very helpful explanation here.
I have always loved the idea of living lean. I am a natural purger and can't stand having excess around me. But somehow the last thing on my list to purge always seems to be my wardrobe. I don't spend a lot of money on clothes. But I tend to hang on to pieces thinking that more is better. Because what if I'm going to such and such place and I might need that! But I was finding that I was becoming less happy with the options I saw in my closet. Sometimes giving yourself too many options actually makes it harder to get dressed in the morning.
So on Saturday night, I spent about two hours going through my closet and dresser drawers. And I only kept the items I truly loved. I then made two additional piles. One pile was to donate because I knew I would never wear those items again. And one pile was to put away in a storage bin as my "maybe" pile. If I don't open up that bin for something in the next three months, it will be donated as well.
Guys, I don't know why I didn't do this a long time ago. It's amazing how good it felt to pare down my choices and only be looking at the items I truly love to wear! Less really is more. And it's forcing me to think about how to wear what I already have. as well as what I feel is truly me in terms of my personal style. This process also made me realize that I've spent way too much time searching for trendy pieces of clothing when really the bulk of my needs are the classic/basic items. And now that the trendy stuff is mostly gone, I can see wardrobe gaps where I do have needs. Things like a couple comfy white tees, black shorts, statement jewelry, and some casual flats that will go with everything.
I put together a few outfits that I will be wearing this Spring. A lot of the pieces can be mixed and matched which is so helpful!
Dress: Old Navy // Jacket: Old Navy // Wedge Sandals: Kohls // Earrings: Noonday // Bag: Etsy from a seller I can no longer find!
Skinny Jeans: American Eagle // Top: J.Crew // Sandals: TJMaxx // Bag: TJMaxx // Hat: Target
(Very old) Cutoff shorts: American Eagle // Button down shirt: American Eagle // Sandals: TJMaxx // Bag: Target // Hat: Target
Lilac Skinny Jeans: Forever 21 // Chambray Shirt: American Eagle // Shoes: TOMS // Bag: TJMaxx // Scarf: Forever 21
Spring in Pennsylvania can have huge temperature swings. So I wanted to have a couple options that would cover anything. I tend to transition my skinny jeans well into spring and summer just by rolling them up to capri length. I am very brand loyal to American Eagle for jeans and shorts because they fit my body type perfectly. I'm still on the hunt for a brand of comfy, but flattering solid color t-shirts to wear on an everyday basis when I'm just doing my carpool mom thang. Who knows of a good one?
