Day 6 of 31 // When Beautiful Lyrics are Kept Top-of-Mind

Sunday, October 6, 2013

Despite loving so much of the modern worship music that's out these days, God has cultivated a strong love and appreciate of the classic hymns as well.  It's highly likely you'll find tears in my eyes every Sunday morning when the choir sings.

I realized the other day that there are a few of these classics that are now written on my heart.  The lyrics have become top of mind whenever I need them.  And for that I am so grateful.  As I was folding laundry the other day, I found myself humming a favorite, How Great Thou Art.  The words pressed heavy on my heart and I couldn't help but sing.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Similarly, this week I was texting with a friend about something and I wrote out the start of a bible verse that came to mind.  She responded back by finishing the next few verses.

How beautiful when the lyrics of hymns as well as the power of God's word are filed in a place so top of mind, that they can be retrieved in the most mundane of activities.  For comfort, for praise, for defense, or for healing.  There's art in retrieving God's word for whatever circumstance you might find yourself in.

Listen to Carrie Underwood KILLING IT on her version of How Great Thou Art.
